Moral dilemma and mental anguish of an impoverished ex-student Raskolnikov in St.Petersburg is the story of Crime and Punishment. The haunting, disturbing and tragic tale is of Rodion Raskolnikov, a young man who descends into guilt, horror, criminality and then punishment, eventually. Living in chaos and poverty, he murders a pawnbroker an old woman and her sister for the sake of money. The crime he commits he believes is perfectly devised and no one would ever regret loss of those victims. Mental life of the Raskolnikov, his mounting sense of horror, the turns and twists of his emotions, struggle of his conscience are discussed in the novel. His actions and reasoning for the crime while he wanders the crowded and hot streets of the city, is brought forth to the readers.
